We all need to be integrated in life but it can sometimes be a bit tricky. Extra support may be appreciated or even needed, to challenge some of the obstacles in our way. Access and confidence being the major challenges. Without this added support, we may lose out on following our interests, repeatedly doing the same safe activities, feeling isolated, not maintaining or widening our relationships after leaving college and depending on family availability to access the wider community. This is where LIFE GUIDE can assist. Your disability may be holding you back. Life guide can work with most disabilities. It may be a hidden one, an invisible one, a medical one, a social one, a physical one or an intellectual one.

You

Most likely you are not in full time education but in any case, you are over 18 years of age. In order to tailor-make a programme for you, I will obviously need to know as much about you in advance but only things that you are comfortable to share and are relevant to us working together. Nothing you tell me would be shared with a 3rd party without your permission. You may request a regular weekly or monthly slot or, once on my books, can call me as and when you need support. I prefer sessions to be at least 3 hours but in any case a minimum session is 2 hours. In an emergency, we can waive this. Flexibility is key to life after academic timetables, so cancellations at short notice will not be charged but notice where possible will be helpful. You will be supported with dignity and respect in all times. I will also aim to be a role model. Yes, there will be agreed boundaries on both sides, isn’t that part of life? Please ensure you can administer your own medicines as I do not prompt, assist nor administer medication. If you think you may at some future time, need help with medication during any of your sessions, please let me know. I will need to obtain written permission from your GP or similar. Rest assured, I am first-aid trained. This service is all about YOU so have a look at the possible activities offered here and let me know if there is anything omitted that you would want to do. It is all about how we work together to achieve YOUR goal for the session.

Me

I call myself a Guide, a Life Guide. I am not a Carer and I am not an escort. I believe I am assisting and guiding you to do interesting things, go to places, take part in activities and be an active member of the community at large. I do this by accompanying you and where necessary steering you safely. I am there to allow and enable you to take part in the activity of your choice. One thing I am not going to do is to take control of your life, make choices for you or manage you except in situations where, for your own safety, I will need to. A competent, no drama and adaptable Life Guide is how I would describe myself. I am confident that I can adapt myself to you and your needs, character and aspirations. Very little fazes me. All I ask is that I know as much about you in advance as you are comfortable to share. The more I know about you, the better I can tailor-make sessions to suit you. Adding value, enriching and broadening your life, is my goal. Your independence is important so I will actively support that, staying in the background discreetly when necessary. Respite and overnight stays can be offered in an emergency or as a one-off in your home. A supervised night stay will have to be carried out in advance. If you think this could be a possibility in the future, we will need to arrange for this to be in place – just in case.
